The PGA Championship comes back to Kiawah in 2031
The Ocean Course gets its third PGA Championship in May 2031, after Rory McIlroy’s eight-shot win in 2012 and Phil Mickelson’s at 50 in 2021. Here’s what’s set, what isn’t yet, and how to be first when it opens.

Three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup
Pete and Alice Dye built the Ocean Course from 1989 to 1991, the year it hosted the Ryder Cup. Here are its biggest championships, and the one coming.
- 1991Ryder Cup
United States 14½, Europe 13½, decided on the 18th green of the last singles match.
- 2007Senior PGA Championship
Won by Denis Watson at nine under.
- 2012PGA Championship
Rory McIlroy won at 13 under, eight strokes clear of David Lynn, the largest margin in the championship’s history. All sand was played as “through the green”: no bunkers.
- 2021PGA Championship
Phil Mickelson won at 6 under by two strokes and, at 50, became the oldest major champion ever. The course played 7,876 yards, the longest in PGA Championship history.
- 2031PGA Championship
Scheduled for May 2031, the course’s third PGA Championship.

What’s set
- Apr. 2024 The PGA of America names the Ocean Course for 2031.
- 2029 The Girls and Boys Junior PGA Championships at the Ocean Course and Turtle Point.
- May 2031 The 113th PGA Championship.
- The Ocean Course becomes the ninth course to host three or more PGA Championships.
- Before then, the 2029 Girls and Boys Junior PGA Championships will be played at the Ocean Course and Turtle Point Golf Course.
- The PGA Championship is now the second major of golf's year, and the Wanamaker Trophy has gone to its winner since 1916.

Play it before they do
The Ocean Course is a resort course, open to the public. In the resort’s own words:
- Guests with a confirmed resort reservation may book tee times at any time for the duration of their stay.
- Guests not staying with Kiawah Island Golf Resort may reserve tee times no sooner than 60 days in advance.
- The Ocean Course is walking only except during the summer months (June, July and August) when carts are allowed for golfers teeing off after 10am (carts restricted to paths).
