The Heyday, remembered: the porch, the pelican, the she-crab
Built by Island Provisions' owner in Hayes Park, open since January 2025. Its last day is Sunday, Oct. 25.
The Heyday opened on Jan. 24, 2025, at 605 Kindred Court in Hayes Park, the 16-acre development on Johns Island, according to The Post and Courier. Owner James Groetzinger, who also runs Island Provisions, designed and built it himself.
He described it as a modern sea island counter-service café, market and bar, built on farm-to-table produce, fresh seafood and local purveyors. Its pelican logo was a nod to the Lowcountry.
It had a full bar with cocktails on tap, a wraparound porch and a fire pit, with local musicians on weekend nights. The Post and Courier singled out the grits and creamed collards with crispy flounder at supper, and noted that the she-crab recipe came from an old church cookbook on Wadmalaw.
Its owners announced on Instagram that the last day is Sunday, Oct. 25. Go by before then.
Why it matters: A piece of the new Johns Island is closing — this is what it was.
